ABSTRACT |
A series of cases of laryngeal tuberculosis was reviewed. Despite a dramatic reduction in the incidence of laryngeal tuberculosis over the last three decades, tuberculous involvement still has to be considered in the differential diagnosis of laryngeal lesions, espicially in Korea. A series of 30 cases of laryngeal tuberculosis during 7 years from March, 1980 to March, 1987 was reviewed. This condition generally presented in males of the 5th decades with pulmonary tuberculosis. The presenting symptoms were usually hoarseness and odynophagia rather than generalized symptoms. The physical findings of the larynx frequently mimicked a tumor or chronic laryngitis. The typical lesion of ulceration in the posterior portion of the larynx was rare, instead the true vocal cord was frequently involved. The changing patterns of laryngeal tuberculosis, diagnosis and treatment were discussed.
