Malignant tumor of the tongue is comparatively infrequent, but a dreadful disease. Retrospectively, the authors analyzed 276 cases with malignant tumor of the tongue proved histopathologically from 1964 to 1978. The results were as follows. 1) Two hundred one patients were male, and forty five patients were female(M : F=5.1 : 1). 2) Average age at diagnosis was 53.6 yrs. with a range of 17 to 77 yrs. of age. 3) The presenting symptoms and signs were as follows : painful ulcerating mass on tongue(50.2%), palpable neck mass(19.5%), swallowing difficulty(8.5%), foreign body sensation in tongue(7.3%), speech disturbance(7.1%), otalgia(2.0%) etc. 4) The mean duration from onset of symptom to first examination was 7.0 months with a range of 1 month to 5 yrs. 5) The patients with palpable neck mass at first physical examination were 126 cases among 273 cases(46.2%). 6) The predirection site was the lateral border of the tongue(65.6%), and then base, dorsum, undersurface, tip in orders. 7) Histopathologically, squamous cell carcinoma was the most common type in the carcinoma group(254 cases : 92%), and sarcoma group was 5 cases(1.9%), among 276 cases. 8) According to TNM system(AJC, 1980), the following data were obtained, such as : T1(32.2%), T2(43.6%), T3(16.1%), and T4(8.1%). NO(53.8%), N1(27.5%), N2(8.4%), and N3(10.3%). Stage I(24.9%), II(19.8%), III(32.2%), and IV(23.1%). 9) Survival rate according to treatment modality. RT ; 3 year survival rate : 26.6%, 5 year survival rate : 19.1%. RT+surgery ; 3 year survival rate : 57.1%, 5 year survival rate : 50.0%. Overall 5 year survival rate : 21.5%.
