ABSTRACT

Chorda tympani nerve are often sacrificed after radical mastoidectomies or other ear operations. However, there are only a few patients who complain of changes in the taste of anterior 2/3 of the tongue for a long duration. The authors investigated taste changes following chorda tympani nerve secitoning in 24 patients in which follow up was possible for 16 months from March 1983 until July 1984. Materials used were 10% dextrose(sweet), physiological saline soln(salty), and lemon juice(sour). Following are the results for a 20 weeks period investigation : First, postoperratively 5 persons complained of metallic taste and 19 others had no subjective symptoms. Second, no significant differences among the three tastes were found during the period of taste recovery. Third, during the recovery period, 4 patients each recovered in the 8th week and 9th week, which made this the peak recovery. 16 patients(a total of 67%) recovered in the first 9 weeks.
