ABSTRACT |
Foreign body aspiration usually occurs at young age group, and is sometimes fatal requiring emergent management. The authors performed clinical analysis on 124 cases of airway foreign bodies in children treated by bronchoscopy at Severance hospital for the past 13 years(1980-1992). The results were as follows ; 1) The male and female ratio was approximately 2 to 1. 2) Most of the cases(77%) were under the age of 2. 3) Peanut(52%) was the most common airway foreign body. 4) The frequent loci of airway foreign body were left main bronchus(49 cases), right main bronchus(38 cases) and trachea(17 cases) in order. 5) The most common chest X-ray finding was obstructive emphysema(60%). 6) By duration of lodgement in the airway, 88 cases(70%) were removed within 1 week and 14 cases(11%) over 30 days. 7) All the cases were successfully treated by ventilating bronchoscopy without any serious complications.
