A Clinical Study of Oblique Temporal Bone Fracture |

ABSTRACT |
Trauma or injury to skull, if suffcient forces are applied, may produce a temporal bone fracture. Many authors classified the temporal bone fractures into three type : 1) longitudinal, 2) transverse, and 3) mixed. But classical and pure longitudinal fractures whose tract is parallel to the long axis of petrous pyramid are rare. Both longitudinal and oblique fracture lines run parallel to the long axis of the petrous pyramid and are easily confused : however their external fracture lines are different. Oblique fracture crosses petrotympanic fissure with sagittal plane but, longitudinal one is within petrotympanic fissure in axial(horizontal) plane. We carried out a retrospective study of the 33 cases of temporal bone fractures based on their operation findings and/or 1.5mm thin-sliced computerized tomography of the temporal bone. Three main categories of fractures were identified : oblique in 57.5%, longitudinal in 21. 2% and transverse in 9.1%.
