ABSTRACT |
Transverse fractures of the temporal bone account for approximately 20% of temporal bone fractures. The injury is frequently accompanied by severe sensorineural hearing loss and loss of vestibular function. Facial paralysis occurs in 50% of cases. Facial paralysis coexistent with total los of auditory and vestibular function in the case of transverse fracture, the translabyrinthine decompression and repair of the facial nerve may be needed. The greatest advantage of the translabyrinthine approach is being able to gain access to the entire nerve by use of one approach. We report the two cases of translabyrinthine end-to-end anastomosis of the facial nerve through meatomastoid rerouting in transverse fracture of the temporal bone. The facial nerve function was House grade IV in case 1 and House grade III in case 2 at 1 year postoperatively.
