ABSTRACT

Effort are focused to evaluate the proliferating capacity of tumor and the degree of malignancy by molecular biologic methods recently. The aim of present study is to investigate whether primary sites, pathologic grades and clinical stages are associated with expression rate of c-myc product in 48 cases of laryngeal cancers. The results were as follows : 1) Among 48 cases, the expression of c-myc protein was found in 26 cases(54.2%). 2) The c-myc oncoprotein expression rates were higher in supraglottic cancer(7/11) than in glottic cancer(19/37), which was not significant statistically. 3) The c-myc oncoprotein expression rates were 31.8% in stage I, 50% in stage II, 87.5% in stage III and 87.5% in stage IV. The c-myc expression rate was higher as clinical stage progresses, and was statistically significant(p<0.05). 4) The c-myc expression rates according to primary stages were 31.8% in T1, 50% in T2, 83.4% in T3, and 81.8% in T4. The c-myc expression rate was higher as the primary stage extended, and was significant statistically(p<0.05). 5) The c-myc expression rate was high in poor histopathologic differentiation cases, but not significant statistically(p>0.05). 6) In conclusion, the expression rate of the c-myc oncogene was partially related to the clinical parameters. Further studies are needed to substantiate that c-myc expression may be considered to be an independent prognostic indicator in the laryngeal carcinoma.
