ABSTRACT

From 1983 to 1987 authors have experienced 14 cases of laryngeal trauma at the Department of Otolaryngology, Keimyung University Hospital. They were analyzed on the clinical basis, concerning the presenting symptoms and signs, nature of trauma, treatment modalities and results. The results are as follows ; 1) The most common cause was iatrogenic one. 2) Laryngeal cartilage fracture occurred in six of these 14 cases and there was one case of laryngotracheal separation. 3) The cases which were treated by conservative method had satisfactory results in voice and respiration. 4) The patients with the stent in the laryngeal lumen had problems such as contracture and granulation. 5) The sooner time-interval between injury and surgical exposure, the better results were obtained. 6) 3 of these 14 cases had unsatisfactory results in voice and respiration but all cases were decannulated.
