ABSTRACT |
Among benign cervical masses, branchial anomaly is rarely encountered. It is congenital in origin, and located on the lateral aspect of the neck. Twenty-four cases of branchial anomaly who had been admitted to the department of Otolaryngology, Haewha hospital, from March 1983 to February 1988 were analysed clinically. The results were as follow ; 1) Twenty two cases(91.7%) were cyst and 2 cases(8.3%) were sinus. Twelve cases(54.5%) had the history of the previous operation for more than once. 2) Among 24 cases, 5 cases(20.8%) were derived from 1st branchial anomaly, 17 cases(70.8%) were derived from 2nd branchial anomaly and 2 cases(8.3%) were derived from 3rd branchial anomaly. 3) Twenty one cases were lined by squamous epithelium and 83.3% of the branchial cysts have lymphoid tissue in their walls. 4) Fifteen cases(63%) were removed completely and 9 cases(37%) were removed incompletely which showed on evidence of recurrence during 1 year follow up. 5) Among 24 cases, postoperative complications were found in 8 cases(33.3%), the most common complication was aspiration(16.7%).
