ABSTRACT |
Increasing incidence of phycomycosis, once a relatively rare fungal disease, is related to the wide spread use of antibiotics, steroids, and immunosuppressive agents etc. are the offending organisms. Although the fatal cases are more likely to occur in chronically debilitated patients with diabetes, leukemia, users of immunosuppressive agents, or with chronic renal diseases, phycomycosis is possible to occur in otherwise normal persons. Only 3 nationally reported nonfatal cases of phycomycosis are not sufficient enough to generate interest among practitioners. Since the early nasal symptoms are evident in over 40% of phycomycosis it must be differentiated from chronic maxillary sinusitis and craniofacial disease despite the great difficulty in diagnosis. The authors are making the report on 4 cases of phycomycosis experienced by our department between June 1984 and April 1988.
