ABSTRACT |
Though nasal polyps are a common clinical problem, their exact structure and etiology have still not been clarified. The glycoconjugates take part in body defence mechanism, as a type of mucus, immunoglobulin and proteolytic enzyme inhibition. The purposes of the present study are to know histologic finding and functional activity of nasal polyp mucosa simultaneously, and to search the distribution of glycoconjugates in nasal polyps histologically. 1) Eosinophilic and neutrophilic polyps were 29 cases/40 cases(72.5%) and 11 cases/40 cases(27.5%), respectively. 2) Various types of mucosal epithelium were demonstrated : ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium(80%), squamous metaplasia(5%), single basal layer(5%) and desquamation(2.5%). 3) Mucosal epithelium and goblet cells in epithelium were demonstrated with strong positivity by periodic acid-shiff(PAS) reaction and alcian blue(AB) stain(PH2.5). 4) Basement membrane shows variety in thickness and better demonstrated in PAS reaction than in AB stain. 5) The glycoprotein in stromal connective tissue was better stained with AB stain than with AB stain than with PAS reaction. 6) Glandular epitheliums were composed of ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium(52.5%), simple columnar epithelium(25.0%), cuboidal cell(20%) and single flat cell(2.5%), glandular structures were well demonstrated with AB and PAS reaction. Also different activities of gland in same microscopic field were observed. 7) There were strong positive reaction of glycoproteins with PAS reaction and AB stain in epithelium, basement membrane and subepithelial tissue. It is suggested that the glycoprotein in tissue play a role in defence mechanism.
