A Clinical Study of the Laryngeal Cancer Patients after Surgery

ABSTRACT

From June, 1984 to Dec, 1986 authors have treated 17 cases of laryngeal cancer by surgical method at the Department of Otolaryngology, Keimyung University Hospital and were analyzed those cases clinically concerning the age and sex, anatomical and histopathological classification, mode of surgical treatment, difference between pre and postoperative TNM staging, postoperative complication and recurrence. The following are the results of our clinical study.

1. Age and Sex    4. Modes of surgical treatment
     • Sex- male : 16cases       • total laryngectomy    : 15 cases
            female : 1 cases      • partial laryngectomy : 2 cases
     • Age distribution(28-67 years)      • endoscopic excision: 1 case
           3rd decase : 1 case      • unilateral RND          : 1 case
           5th decade : 1 case       • bilateral FND            : 2 cases
           6th decade : 7 cases       • PMMC flap               : 2 cases
           7th decade : 8 cases  5. Difference between preop. and postop. TNM
2. Classifications of anatomic site     staging
     • glottic ca            : 3 cases      • under staging : 2 cases
     • supraglottic ca   : 3 cases          over staging : 2 cases
     • transglottic ca    : 9 cases 6. Postoperative complications
     • hypopharynx ca : 2 cases      • wound infection and pharyngocutaneous
3. Histopathologic classifications       fistula : 3 cases
     • squamous cell ca : 15 cases      • stomal stenosis : 4cases
     • carcinosarcoma    : 1 case  
     • verrucous ca         : 1 case  
7. Recurrence or distant metastasis  
     • stomal recurrence  : 1 case  
     • local recurrence     : 1 case  
     • distant metastasis  : 0 case
