Clinical Study of Facial Bone Fractures

ABSTRACT

Recently, the incidence of traffic accidents has increased with development of high speed transportation system. As a result of this, the facial injury also has been increased. The authors had studied 51 cases of facial bone fractures, excluding nasal bone fracture, from March, 1983 through February, 1987, and the following results were obtained : 1) The most common age group was 21-40 years and sex distribution was 42 male(82.4%) and 9 female(17.6%). 2) The most common cause was traffic accidents(80.4%). 3) The most common site was zygomatic complex fracture(tripod fracture) but single fracture on the mandibule or zygomatic arch alone was also noted. 4) The most common presenting symptom and sign were pain and tenderness(95.6%). Others were included soft tissue injury, epistaxis, deformity, conjunctival hemorrhage, etc. 5) Commonly used reduction methods were open reduction with interosseous wiring. Sometimes intermaxillary fixation was done. 6) Most of patients were healed without specific problems.
