The authors generally described the clinical survey of the patients who had received nasal septal surgery in the view points of age, sex, clinical manifestation, site and shape of deformity in preoperative and postoperative patient's satisfaction and value of relative nasal airway resistance from 44 patients, for 22 months from March 1986 to December 1987. The results were as follows ; 1) They were much more requently involved in male than in female as 43 males and only 1 female, and most frequent age group was 3rd decade as 40.9%. 2) As the etiologic factors, trauma on the face was 25% and nasal polyp was 15.9%, and others were undetermined. 3) Patient's subjective symptoms were nasal obstruction in all cases, rhinorrhea 47.7%, anosmmia 4.5%, nasal bleeding 6.8% and headache 6.8%. 4) Septal deformities classified by the site and shape in operative finding, of the cartilaginous part middle portion was involved mainly as 97.9%, and caudal portion 25.0%, and dorsal portion 25.0%, and of the bony part perpendicular plate of ethmoid was 56.8%, vomer 59.0%, superior portion 18.2%, crest of maxilla 52.2% and crest of palatine bone 25.0%. Deviation to Lt. side was 48.8% and to Rt. side was 51.2%. 5) Combined abnormal findings in nasal cavity were hypertrophy of turbinate mainly as 56.8%, chronic maxillary sinusitis 31.8%, nasal polyp 15.9%, synechiae 6.8% and allergic rhinitis 6.8%. 6) Postoperative value of the relative nasal airway resistance to total airway resistance checked in 16 patients with septal surgery was 38.7%, and this was significantly improved(p<0.005) comparing to preoperative value(60.1%), and similar to that of normal control group(42.1%).
