ABSTRACT |
Statistical analysis of 202 foreign bodies in the esophagus, air passage, external auditory canals, nasal cavities, oral cavity and pharynx which were encountered in the Department of Otoloaryngology, Soonchunhyang University Hospital from March 1979 to Oct. 1985 was presented. 1) Distribution of location was 84 cases(65.5%) in the esophagus, 42 cases(20.8%) in the oral cavity and pharynx, 33 cases(16.3%) in the external auditory canals, 30 cases(14.9%) in the nasal cavities and 13 cases(6.4%) in the air passages. 2) Coins were the most frequent foreign bodies in the esophagus(65.5%). Beans and peanuts were the most frequent foreign bodies in the air passages(53.8%). In the external auditory canals, insects(72.7%), in the nasal cavities, beans(16.7%), in the oral cavity and pharynx, fish bones(97.7%) were the mort frequent foreign bodies. 3) In the age incidence, most of the patients in the esophagus, air passage and nasal cavities were children under the age of five. But in the oral cavity and pharynx, 71.3% of foreign bodies were over 20 years age. 4) In sex distribution, males were prevalent. 5) The most prevalent site of lodgement in the esophagus was the first narrowing(83.3%). In air passage, bronchial foreign bodies were more common and the left bronchus was the more frequent site(69.2%). In the external auditory canals and nasal cavities, right side was more common and foreign bodies in the oral cavity and pharynx were mostly found at the palatine tonsils. 6) In duration of lodgement, 82.1% of esophageal foreign bodies were removed within one day and 61.6% of foreign bodies in air passage were removed within 3 days.
