ABSTRACT

The incidence of otogenic intracranial complication has decreased markedly following the advent of modern chemotherapy. Lateral sinus thrombosis is an infections thrombophlebitis of the sigmoid portion of the transverse sinus that is usually secondary to acute or chronic otitis media. Lateral sinus thrombosis at one time carried a very high mortality and even today it may be fatal if uncontrolled, infection spreads to the other intracranial tissue planes, or the organisms causing the pyaemia do not respond to the antibiotics. The picture and bacteriology of lateral sinus thrombosis have changed with the advent of antibiotics as has the usefulness of various diagnostic tests. Recently we experienced a case of otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis, and reports this case along with literature survey.
