ABSTRACT |
The authors analyzed audiometric findings of 42 patients with chronic renal failure who were taken only conservative medical management during the period of January, 1981 through March, 1983. Twenty five (59.5%) patients had varying degree of hearing impairment. No age and sex difference were noted. Hearing loss was bilateral and sensori-neural type in all cases. High tone loss was found in 18 (72%) patients, horizontal type in 2 (8%) patients. 5 (20%) patients had sudden hearing loss at the begining. Site-of-lesion test showed cochlear lesions. There was no statistically significant correlation between hearing loss and underlying causes and severity of renal failure. The most important cause was considered to be ototoxic drugs used in the course of this illness.
