Clinicostatistical and Bacteriological Study of Otofuruncle

ABSTRACT

The otofuruncle constitues one of the most frequent condition encountered in otologic practice. So we studied the issue with interest. The clinicostatistical and bacteriological survey were undertaken in 297 patients who had visited OPD of ENT department of St. Benedict Hospital, Busan during the 2 years from Jan. 1980 to Dec. 1981. The following results were obtained. 1) The rate of otofuruncle was 3.6% of the whole ENT outpatients (991 : 27,149). 2) The highest distribution of age was in the 0-10 age group (63%). 3) Sex distribution was in the rates, male vs female was 180 : 133 (1.3 : 1). 4) The monthly incidence showed the highest one in July, August and september. 5) Average duration of the illness on first visiting was 4.7 days. 6) Average duration of treatment was 5.3 days. 7) The affection in right ear was 43.3% and left ear 56.7%. 8) The site of lesion was in the order of posterior aspect (21%), anterior (19%), superior (17.4%), inferior (17.4%), multiple (13%). 9) 103 out of 313 ears were treated by incision and drainage (33%). 10) The most common causative organism was Staph. aureus (88%).
