ABSTRACT |
Determination of indication for surgical treatment of palatine tonsil and of focal infection are very important problems in the otolaryngological field even nowadays. The author performed tonsillar provocation test in the cases of chronic tonsillitis, which were divided in group 1 (11 cases tested after 30 minutes) and group 2 (20 cases tested after 3 hours). In comparing pre & postmassage data of group 1 with those of group 2, following results were obtained. 1) Elevation of average body temperature was 0.2℃ and 0.34℃ in group 1 & 2 respectively. 2) Erythrocyte sedimentation rate was increased in 1 case (9%) and 5 cases (25%) in group 1 & 2 respectively. 3) Number of leukocytes, hemoglobin value and urinalysis showed no significant change. 4) Increasing number more than 1,000 per cubic mm in leukocytes revealed 5 cases (46%) and 9 cases (45%) in group 1 & 2 respectively. 5) The increase of differential count of neutrophils more than normal upper limit were showed in 8 cases (73%) and 16 cases (80%) in group 1 & 2 respectively. The decrease of differential count of lymphocytes less than normal lower limit were showed in 7 cases (64%) and 10 cases (50%) in group 1 & 2 respectively. 6) In cases of elevated body temperature more than 0.2℃, the number of leukocytes were increased and neutrophils and lymphocytes were markedly deviated up and down in its percentage. 7) Elevated body temperature more than 0.2℃, increased number of leukocytes more than 1,000 per cubic mm, and increase of differential count of neutrophils over normal upper limit and decrease of differential count of lymphocytes below normal lower limit were considered as positive criteria of tonsillar provocation test after 3 hours of tonsillar massage.
