Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is an uncommon, non-capsulated benign tumor having rich vascular and fibrotic tissue with rapid expansile growth and locally invasive tendency. It occurs mainly in the nasopharynx in adolescent males. It considers to be clinically malignant because of rapid expansile growth and eroding the surrounding vital structures, anatomical complexity of nasopharynx, bleeding tendency in surgical procedure, recurrence if not completely removed, and resistance to treatments. Author studied the clinical analysis of 11 cases of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (confirmed by histopathological study in 9 cases out of them) at Dep't of Otolaryngology, Chonnam University Medical School during June 1, 1973-May 31, 1978. Following results were obtained : 1) 10 cases were males and 1 case female. 2) Age distributribution shows 9 to 19 year old. 3) The most frequent symptom were epistaxis (9 cases), nasal obstruction (8 cases), and duration of onset was 3 months to 3 years. Six cases had been received operation under the diagnosis of other rhinologic diseases. 4) Under the transpalatal approach, surgical removal were carried out in 8 cases, By adminstration of Estrogen (0.06mg/day) or Stilbesterol (2.5mg/day) for 3 or 4 weeks preoperatively, we observed the decrease of their size and vascularity, grayish white discolorization, and the increased solidity of the tumor masses. 5) We observed that the blood loss was lessened with the pulling of the external carotid artery with two or three layer of Penrose during resection. The amount of blood loss was about 500cc to 2,500cc, averaging 1,160cc during the operation. 6) By observations for 4 months to 3 years postoperatively, one case was recurred due to incomplete resection, one case complained of mild rhinolalia aperta, and others are uneventful.
