Clinical Survey of the Laryngeal Cancer

ABSTRACT

There have been many reports for laryngeal cancer since Billroth reported first laryngectomy case in 1874. The author has clinically observed and figured out their clinical statistics of 69 cases of the laryngeal cancer. They are all cases which verified histopathologically from January 1970 to June 1977. The following results are obtained. 1. Average age is 55.9 in years, male-55.2 and female-60.6 and sex ratio of male of female is 6.7 : 1. Age distribution shows a predilection for sixth and seventh decaded (69.9%). 2. Distribution of locations according to anatomical region are supraglottic-55.1%, glottic-42.0% & subglottic-2.9%. 3. Stage classification of the TNM system according to A.J.C. shows stage I-4.3%, stage II-47.8%, stage III-30.4% and stage IV-17.4%. 4. Most of the cases (65.2%) had visited the Dep't. of Otolaryngology, C.N.U.H. within 6 months. 5. Chief complaints are almost hoarseness (82.6%), dysphagia in 27.5% and sore throat in 23.2%. 6. All of the cases are squamous cell carcinoma histopathologically. 7. All metastatic cases from laryngeal cancer are 49.3%, among them 85.3% are invaded regional deep cervical lymph nodes. 8. Cases who received treatment are 34.6%.
