ABSTRACT

Laryngeal papilloma is the most common benign tumor of the larynx. There are two major types, viz., simple and multiple. A third type hyperkeratotic, is also identified by the pathologists. Multiple type occurs usually in childhood mainly in 5 to 7 years old age group and has the same ratio in both sexes. The virus is strongly thought, by most authors, to be the causative agent. Simple type develops chiefly at 30 to 50 years of age and is twice as frequent in males than in females, and is usually located at the anterior 2/3 of the vocal cords. Hyperkeratotic type shows a strong tendency for malignant transformation(reported as 3 to 5%). We have classified 57 patients having laryngeal papillomas who visited the Department of Otolaryngology, SNUH during the period of 1963 to 1970, in several clinical points.
