ABSTRACT |
Foreign body problems, remain in the field of Otolaryngology. Especially, the inhalation of a foreign body into the respiratory pathway is sometimes fatal accident. Two hundred cases of airway foreign bodies were treated at Seoul National University Hospital(SNUH) for the past 10 years. So annal incidence at SNUH could be roughly 20 cases in a year. Male to female ratio is almost 2 to 1 and 180 out of 200 cases(90%) were below age of 5. The peak age is 1-2 years of age. Foreign bodies were mainly located at the main bronchus level and segmental bronchus was the next. Peanuts were the most common airway foreign bodies. Metals and plastics were also not uncommon. Most common X-ray findings were pulmonary emphysema. Chest X-ray was helpful for the diagnosis of airway foreign body in 70-80% of cases. One hundred eighty seven cases(93.5%) of foreign bodies were successfully removed by ventilating bronchoscopy but there were 3 deaths. Although the mortality rate is as low as 1.5%, airway foreign body is regarded as life threatening condition and requires early ventilating bonchoscopy.
