The clinical study of the temporal bone fractures.

ABSTRACT

This is a study of 104 cases of the temporal bone fractures of patients who were admitted to the Department of Otolaryngology and Neurosurgery. Chosun University Hospital, after the head injuries between January 1983 and December 1990. The results were as follows : 1) Of the 104 patients, 74 patients (71.2%) were men and 30 patients (28.8%) were women. And sex ratio was 2.47:1 (male predominant). 2) In the etiologic classification, the most common cause of a temporal bone fractures was automobile accident occuring in 58 cases (55.8%). 3) In fracture type, longitudinal fractures were 76 cases (73.1%), transverse fractures were 16 case (15.4%), mixed fracture were 12 cases (11.5%). 40 cases (38.5%) were involved on the right side only, 52 cases (50%) on the left only, and 12 cases bilateral. 4) The most common symptom was hearing impairment which occurred 83 cases (79.8%), ear bleeding in 62 cases (59.6%), tinnitus in 37 cases (35.6%), vertigo in 23 cases (22.1%), and facial nerve paralysis in 15 cases (14.4%). 5) In the classification of the hearing loss, conductive hearing loss occurred in 15 cases (21.1%), sensorineural hearing loss in 17 cases (23.9%), and mixed hearing loss in 31 cases (43.8%). 6) Facial nerve were involved in 15 cases (14.4%) and the degree was over the grade II in the Botmann and Jongkees classification.
