Since the first description by Hippocrates, the terminology of globus syndrome has been obtained to those patients complaining of chocking or lump sensastion in the throat without any determined causal factor. Recently, gastroesophageal reflux disease was proposed as the important cause of globus. From January 1994 to December 1994, we have evaluated globus patients by general work up, radiologic and endoscopic studies. Sixty five globus patients those who were ruled out other conditions and diagnosed as suspicious gastroesophageal reflux disease were subdivided into 4 groups in according to compound of globus, larynx findings and gastrointestinal symptoms. Triple therapy, i.e. antacid, H2 blocker, gastrointestinal tract regulator, was supplied to each group and diazepam as control for 2-6 months. The efficacy of triple therapy was more than 90% on improvement of larynx finding and symptoms. So, gastrosophageal reflux disease could be diagnosed as the cause of globus, retrospectively. A view point of diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease, as treatment, the triple therapy was more efficacious for intial treatment for globus patients, nevertheless, no pathologic conditions of larynx and gastrointestinal symptoms.
