ABSTRACT |
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of
electrical stimulation to the lesioned vestibular system on responses related to
vestibulo-autonomic reflax such as changes of activity of the cervical vagus nerve and intragastric pressure just after unilateral labyrinthectomy in
Sprague-Dawley rats. Changes of activity of the cervical vagus nerve as well as those of intragatric
pressure induced by electrical stimulation of the unilateral vestibular nerve with 200Hz, 0.1ms, 0.2-0.5mA or unilateral labyrinthectomy were measured by means of electrophysiological recording system. Resting electrical activity of the cervical vagus nerve
showed rhythmic pattern with about 54±8cycle/min, which was in accordance with spontaneous repiratory cycle. Rhythmic
pattern was that activity of the cervical vagus nerve was increased during inspiratory phase and decreased during
expiratory phase. In the intact labyrinthine rats, electrical stimulation of the unilateral vestibular system increased activity of the cervical vagus nerve bilaterally. However, cervical vagal activity was decreased by electrical stimulation
of the lesioned vestibular system in unilateral labyrinthectomized rats. When
electrical stimulation was applied to the unilateral vestibular system in the intact labyrinthine rats, the frequency and pressure of the gastric contraction were decreased. Also, the similar results were observed by unilateral labyrinthectomy. Whereas, decreased frequency and pressure of the gastric contraction elicited by unilateral labyrinthectomy were increased to subnormal level by electrical stimulation of the lesioned vestibular system. The above results suggest that electrical stimulation of the lesioned vestibular system can be clinically applied to ameliorate autonomic symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and perspiration/caused by acute unilateral vestibular dysfunction.
