ABSTRACT

The bithermal caloric test is an integral part of vestibular evaluation procedure. A major problem of caloric test using air as a stimulus medium is a variability of the response, because it is difficult to maintain the caloric stimulus constantly in repeated tests. We performed air caloric test(temperature : 24℃ and 48℃, air flow : 8L/min, duration : 60 second) repeatedly in 30 normal subjects having no otologic disease in order to evaluate the test-retest variability of air caloric response under our vestibular laboratroy condition. As a result, the mean value of unilateral weakness(UW), directional preponderance(DP), UW difference and DP difference between the tests were 17.0±13.6%, 10.4±7.7%, 8.1±5.4%, and 11.3±11.4% respectively. The results of the test were not influenced significantly by examiner, shape of ear canal, test interval, temperature or sex(p>0.05).
