ABSTRACT |
Regional intra-arterial chemotherapy has the potential advantages of delivering a higher concentration of effective chemotherapeutic agents to the tumor site while minimizing systemic toxic reactions. Seventeen patients with head and neck cancer were treated with combined regional intra-arterial and systemic chemotherapy. Total 29 cycles were performed at the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Korea Cancer Center Hospital from Sept. 1988 to Sept. 1989. The results were as follows ; 1) Immediate overall response rate(CR+PR) was 88.3%. 2) Relatively high response rate was obtained in the patients with tonsil cancer or maxillary cancer. 3) Side effects were similar to the systemic chemotherapy. But ipsilateral alopecia, high tone hearing loss, the swelling of the face and neck, and facial nerve palsy were characteristic in the regional intra-arterial chemotherapy. 4) In the cases of the palliative chemotherapy, patients were improved in the symptoms that were local pain and/or odynophagia.
