ABSTRACT |
The concept of functional electrical stimulation to the reanimation of the paralyzed face was adapted for blinking reanimation in the unilateral residual peripheral facial nerve palsy model of the rabbit to achieve the facial symmetry in the rest and to protect the eye from the exposure keratitis. A synchronizing stimulator system, which consisted of bioelectronic amplifier, motor unit potential sensor, stimulator control circuit and electrical stimulator, was designed to deliver a predetermined electrical currents for mimetic blink to the denervated orbicularis oculi muscle in response to a motor unit potentials of the contralateral innervated eyelid at the time of blink. The stimulation parameters for the mimetic blink of the denervated eyelid, requirements of amplifier to pick up the stable motor unit potentials of the innervated eyelid, algorism to detect the motor unit potentials of the innervated eyelid at the time of blink and to control the stimulator synchronously, and the actually integrated synchronizing stimulator system to the experimental model were probed. Obvious symmetric blinks were observed in all experimental models. The error rate of the system were 10.26% of false negative and 4.88% of false positive. The stimulation system could be tested successfully for 45 to 103 days in 6 experimental models. The data obtained in this series of experiments should permit the experimental prototype of functional electric stimulation for further clinical applications in facial reanimation.
