ABSTRACT |
Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is a rare but fatal pathologic entity. Early diagnosis and treatment, including wide surgical debridement and the use of Amphotericin B, are needed if a rapid fatal course and complications are to be avoided. Recently we experienced two cases of rhinocerebral mucormycosis. One case is a 51 years old female, who had diabetes for 20 years and suffered from sudden right cheek swelling, right ophthalmoplegia and right palatal necrosis.
Caldwell-Luc's operation and intranasal ethmoidectomy was done and biopsy proved mucormycosis. Total 2.0gms of Amphotericin B was given and she was cured. Another case is a 54 years old female, who was diagnosed as acute lymphocytic leukemia and given chemotheraphy. She suffered from sudden right cheek swelling, right ophthalmoplegia, right palatal necrosis and altered consciousness.
Caldwell-Luc's operation was done and biopsy proved mucormycosis but she expired. This is the report of two cases of rhinocerebral mucormycosis with the review of literatures.
