ABSTRACT |
A mucocele is a cyst-like lesion which contains sterile mucoid secretion and becomes a pyocele when it is infected. Pathologically a mucocele is a cystic cavity with mucoperiosteal walls limited by a low cuboidal or respiratory epithelium with chronic inflammatory change. It occurs in relation to the
blckage of the natural sinus ostium and produces a local bone destruction and is treated only by surgery. Mucoceles are usually found in the frontal sinus and ethmoid sinus and the sphenoid sinus mucocele is rare. Recently we experienced a mucocele originated from sphenoid sinus which was treated by intranasal sphenoethmoidectomy by use of microscope and self-retaining retractor and speculum and the result was satisfactory. So, we present this case with a brief review of the literature.
