ABSTRACT

This study was attempted to investigate the effects of nasal packing and air-humidification on arterial blood PO2, PCO2 and pH. Arterial blood gas analysis was performed in 20 patients undergoing intranasal surgery. The patients with bilateral nasal packing had an average PO2 drop of 5 mmHg, PCO2 increase of 2.5 mmHg and no pH change. The change of arterial blood gases by nasal packing was abolished by air-humidification, suggesting that humidification is an effective measurement to improve hypoxemia in patients with nasal obstruction.
