Clinical Observation on Hearing Disturbance in Diabetic Patients |

ABSTRACT |
From October 1986 to August 1987, we carried audiologic evaluation for the relationship of hearing disturbances in diabetics. The present study is an investigation into the hearing threshold of one hundred and sixty subjects, ninty-six controls and sixty-four diabetics. The control group comprised fifty males and forty-six females, and the diabetic group twenty-nine males and thirty-five females. The pure-tone audiometry was administered to all patients in the study in a standard double-wall sound booth by a skilled audiologist. The following results were obtained : 1) The sensorineural hearing loss was seen in 59.4% of diabetic subjects. 2) The hearing was more impaired in cases with neuropathy than in cases with retinopathy. All of the case combined with retinopathy and neuropathy had hearing impairment. 3) Since Dekleyn report, it has been well known that diabetes mellitus was related to hearing impairment, and several papers has been published about diabetic induced hearing impairment. The aim of these paper was to establish the diagnostic tool of hearing impairment in patient with disbetes mellitus.
