Nasal secretions include water, cellular elements, electrolytes, immunoglobulins, enzymes, serum protein, and mucous glycoproteins. The first defense line is the nasal mucus layer, while the second line is the cilliary beating. The third defense line is the epithelium and submucosa. The purposes of the present study are to know both histologic findings and functional activity of sinus mucosa simultaneously, and to investigate whether glycoproteins are different in mucosa by pathologic types(infiltrating, edematous, fibrous, & mixed). The results were as follows : 1) Severely damaged mucosa of infiltrating and edematous type was not shown positive Periodic acid-Schiff(PAS) or Alcian Blue(AB) reaction of mucus layer. 2) As cilliated cell was lost, goblet cells with positive PAS and AB reaction were increased in numbers. 3) The sinusitis mucosa with damaged epithelium was showing thickened PAS positive basement membrane. 4) Degree of glandular cell hypertrophy was variable. Also in same specimen, secretory activity of gland was variable ; active and inactive. 5) As a result of this study, it was suggested that secretory phase was related to sinus mucosa gland, and that glycoprotein in mucus layer and basement membrane served as protectant.
