ABSTRACT |
At present, rhinometry is an investigative rather than a clinical tool, but the demands of objective measurements of nasal airway patency are increasing in the clinical evaluation of nasal obstruction and are essential in objectively measuring the ability of drugs and surgical procedures to improve nasal airflow. We evaluated nasal airway resistances in 15 normal subjects and 5 patients with the symptom of nasal obstruction using spirometry. The results were ; 1) PEFR(Peak Expiratory Flow Rate) was the most reliable parameter in measuring nasal airway resistance. 2) The ratio of nasal airway resistance to toal airway resistance in 15 normal subjects was 39.8±11.0 S.D. 3) The ratio of nasal airway resistance to total airway resistance in 5 patients was elevated significantly than that of normal subjects. So, we present a new method of evaluating nasal airway patency using spirometry and discuss its possibility in clinical application with literature review.
