ABSTRACT |
Lingual thyroid is an unusual lesion that must be considered in any patient who has a mass in the base of the tongue. It usually results from failure of descent from the foramen of cecum of the primitive thyroid cartilage in the embryo. The incidence is much higher in female and seventy percent or more of the cases have no other functioning thyroid. It should be always confirmed by radioactive scanning on the neck and tongue area. The treatment varies depending upon the problem that arise. Recently the authors experienced a case of lingual thyroid in a eight year-old girl who was admitted because of dysphagia and dysphonia. Here we present this case with review of the literatures.
