ABSTRACT |
The author studied the results of 639 biopsies and prepared a statistical analysis at the department of otolaryngology, Korea University Hospital from Jan. 1970 to Aug. 1982. The purpose of the analysis was to advance the study of tumors in the E.N.T. field. The results obtained were as follows : 1) Among the total of 639 cases, there were 169 inflammation cases (26.4%) and 470 tumor cases (73.5%) which consisted of 167 cases of malignant and 303 cases of benign tumors. 2) In the sex distribution of tumors, there were 71.9% male and 28.1% female for malignant tumors and there were 56.1% male and 45.9% female for benign tumors. 3) In the age distribution of tumors, there were 85.0% malignant tumors in the age group above forty and 64.7% benign tumors in young aged group below forty. 4) Of malignancy (167 cases), larynx was the most frequent site of regional incidence showing 57 cases (34.5%) and the nose and paranasal sinus (26 cases : 15.5%) next in order and of benign tumors (303 cases), larynx was the most frequent site of regional incidence showing 169 cases (55.7%) and tongue (30 cases : 9.9%) next in order. 5) Of malignancy (167 cases), squamous cell carcinoma (117 cases : 70.0%) was the most frequent histologic type and malignant lymphoma (18 cases : 10.7%) next in order, and of benign tumors (303 cases), polyp (109 cases : 35.9%) was the most frequent histologic type and papilloma (56 cases : 18.4%) next in order. 6) Of inflammation (169 cases), tongue was the most frequent site of regional incidence showing 39 cases (23.0%) and the larynx (34 cases : 20.1%) next in order and chronic nonspecific inflammation was the most frequent histologic type and tuberculous granuloma (19 cases : 11.2%) next in order.
