A Clinical Survey of 668 Cases of Patients with Hoarseness

ABSTRACT

A Clinical survey on 668 cases of patients with hoarseness was performed at the Department of Otolaryngology of Kyung Hee University Hospital during the past 4 years from Jan. 1977 to Dec. 1980. The obtained results were as follows ; 1) Among total out-patient of 23,785 who visited Dept. of Otolaryngology, the patients complaining hoarseness were 688 cases(2.9%). 2) Among the 688 cases, males were 345 cases(50.1%) and female were 343 cases(49.9%), the sex ratio being 1 : 1. 3) The highest incidence of age in order of frequency were 4th decade, 148 cases(21.5%), 5th decade being 139 cases(20.2%), and 3rd decade being 135 cases(19.6%). 4) The underlying diseases causing the hoarseness in order of frequency were chronic laryngitis in 207 cases(30.1%), acute laryngitis in 126 cases(18.3%), laryngeal nodule in 100 cases(14.5%), and vocal polyp and malignant tumor in 53 cases(7.7%). 5) The duration of symptoms were 3 to 6 months in 192 cases(27.9%), 1 to 3 months in 188 cases(27.3%), and within 15 days in 119 cases(17.3%) etc.
