ABSTRACT |
Lipoma of the tonsil is a very rare lesion, although it is a common benign tumor in other areas of the body. The author experienced recently a case of a large lipoma on the right palatine tonsil invading the soft and hard palate. A 15 year old boy was admitted to the Department of Otolaryngology, Wallace Memorial Baptist Hospital, on July 30, 1979. He complained of a painless swelling of the right soft palatal region and right tonsillar hypertrophy. At the time of surgery, the tumor was found to involve the right half of the soft palate from the tonsillar fossa, uvula and encroached upon the hard palate. Under general anesthesia the tumor was completely removed via transoral approach. The tumor mass was 5.0×4.5×2.0cm and was well encapsulated. The histopathological examination of the tumor was confirmed as a lipoma. The patient was discharged on the second postoperative day. He made an uneventful recovery and followed in the O.P.D.
