A statistical analysis for 696 cases of diagnostic biopsy was attempted to evaluate the general incidence rate of the clinical use of biopsy, sex and age distribution, regional incidence rate, duration of the symptoms, varieties of histopathological classification by cases. Obtained results were as follows: 1) Among the 22,107 new patients, 696 biopsies were performed (3.1%), composed 427 male cases (61.4%) and 269 female cases (38.6%) with a ratio of 1.6 : 1, and the most common group in age was 6th decade (161 cases, 23.1%), followed by 5th (135 cases, 19.4%) and 7th (117 cases, 16.8%) decade. 2) Average duration of the symptoms was most common in case of below the 3 months (182 cases, 26.1%), followed by between 6 months and 1 year (156 cases, 22.4%) and between 3 and 6 months (147 cases, 21.1%), in order. 3) Regional distribution of the practical use of the diagnostic biopsy was nose and paranasal sinus 91 cases (13.1%), pharynx and oral region 160 cases (23.0%), larynx 131 cases (18.8%), exophagus 10 cases (1.4%), trachea and bronchus 30 cases (4.3%), ear 26 cases (3.7%), head and neck region 248 cases (35.6%). 4) Histopathologically, benign tumors were 270 cases (38.8%), malignant tumors 252 cases (36.2%), nonspecific inflammation 94 cases (13.5%), specific inflammation 75 cases (10.8%), and the remained were miscellaneous lesions. 5) Nose and Paranasal sinus: Among the 91 biopsies, benign tumors were 31 cases (34.1%) malignant tumors 51 cases (56.0%), inflammation 9 cases (9.9%). In benign tumors, papilloma was 13 cases (41.9%), angiofibroma 5 cases (35.0%) etc.. In malignant tumors, squamous cell carcinoma was 35 cases (68.6%), undifferentiated carcinoma 3 cases (5.9%) etc.. 6) Pharynx and Oral region: Among the 160 biopsies, benign tumors were 62 cases (38.8%), malignant tumors 56 cases (35.0%), inflammation 42 cases (26.3%). In benign tumors, hemangioma was 15 cases (24.2%), cyst 11 cases (17.7%) etc.. In malignant tumors, squamous cell carcinoma was 33 cases (58.9%), malignant lymphoma 9 cases (16.1%) etc.. 7) larynx: Among the 131 biopsies, benign tumors were 76 cases (58.0%), malignant tumors 39 cases (29.8%), inflammation 13 cases (9.9%), and miscellaneous lesion 3 cases (2.3%). In benign tumors, nodule was 58 cases (76.3%), papilloma 10 cases (13.2%) etc.. Malignant tumors were all squamous cell carcinoma. 8) Esophagus: Among the 10 biopsies, benign tumor was 1 case (10.0%), malignant tumors 7 cases (70.0%), inflammation 1 case (10.0%), and miscellaneous lesion 1 case (10.0%). One case of benign tumor was polyp. In malignant tumor, squamous cell carcinoma was 6 cases (85.7%). 9) Trachea and Bronchus: Among the 30 biopsies, malignant tumor were 13 cases (43.3%), inflammation 16 cases (53.5%), and miscellaneous lesion 1 case (3.3%). In malignant tumor, squamous cell carcinoma was 9 cases (69.2%), small cell carcinoma 3 cases (23.1%). 10) Ear: Among the 26 biopsies, benign tumors were 12 cases (46.2%), malignant tumors 8 cases (30.8%), inflammation 6 cases (23.1%). In benign tumor, cyst was 6 cases (50.0%), eosinophilic granuloma 2 cases (16.7%). In malignant tumor, metastatic carcinoma was 4 cases (50.0%), squamous cell carcinoma 2 cases (25.0%). 11) Head and neck region: Among the 248 biopsies, benign tumors were 88 cases (35.5%), malignant tumors 78 cases (31.5%), inflammation 82 cases (33.1%). In benign tumor, cyst was 14 cases (15.9%), hemangioma and papilloma were 6 cases (6.8%) each other. In malignant tumor, metastatic carcinoma was 39 cases (50.0%), squamous cell carcinoma 11 cases (14.1%), malignant lymphoma 10 cases (12.8%) etc.. |
