Cancer of the maxillary sinus is infrequent, but a dreadful disease. Symptoms occur late when the disease is advanced, and treatment results are poor. As in cancer anywhere, early diagnosis improves survival result. The author analyzed 122 cases of cancer of the maxillary sinus confirmed histopathologically. Primary malignancies were only studied. Seventy-nine patients were male and 43 were female. Average age at diagnosis was 47.4 years with a range of 21 to 74 years of age. The most common complaints were nasal obstruction, cheek swelling, cheek pain, headache, etc.. Physical examinations showed visible tumor large enough for biopsy in 67.4%. Ten patients (12%) had clinically regional and distant metastases to the cervical lymph nodes, liver, etc.. The squamous cell carcinoma was the most common malignacy (69.9%). A combination of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy was utilzed as main mode of therapy. Continuous evaluation of an evolving treatment program and a following checkup ae needed to develop the most effective therapy for antral cancer. Successful control of the antral cancer rests with early diagnosis followed by aggressive therapy.
