ABSTRACT

Acute osteomyelitis of the maxilla in the newbron which was first described by Rees(1847), is a rare condition in which the patient develops a massive osseus infection of the midface during the first few weeks of life. A 2 week old boy was admitted to the hospital on Feb. 14, 1978, with chief complaints of reddish swelling over cheek and eye and continuous high fever for 4 days. Physical examination revealed profuse purulent discharge in right nasal cavity and oroantral fistula was demonstrated in the alveolar process of the maxilla in the region of the canine fossa. After he was taken sequestrectomy under the general endotracheal anesthesia on Feb. 15, 1978, his physical status was improved, but five weeks later the swelling recurred with a purulent discharge. The newborn was healed with antibiotics of six weeks duration.
