Pathological study of chronic otitis media was done in biopsy specimens from 200 cases of chronic otomastoiditis. Pathological changes showed granulation tissue, cholesteatoma, fibrosis, cholesterol granuloma, subepithelial glandular structure, tympanosclerosis, bone destruction and neo-osteogenesis. The complication of chronic otitis media was more commonly observed in cholesteatoma cases, and it includes subperiosteal abscess, facial palsy, labyrinthine fistula, subdural abscess, sinus thrombophlebitis, and meningitis. From this study it was concluded : 1) From a histopathological standpoint, chronic silent otitis media was not uncommon. 2) In clinico-pathological view point, granulation tissue was the most important pathological tissue. 3) The complication and sequelae were more frequently observed secondary to cholestoma than to granulation tissue.
