ABSTRACT

In an attempt to determine SPEECH RECEPTION THRESHOLD in Korean language, we have selected gentle words and spoken into a taperecorder. From the tape-recorder we put the voice into the audiometer with an average sound intensity of 0 db where it is amplified to a desired intensity, which can be read on the audiometer scale. We have made a test with these words on young, healthy Koreans (63) with normal pure tone audiogram and found an average speech reception threshold of 23.3 db in List I and 24.4 db in List II. To make the discrimination test, we put in a sound intensity 25 db above speech threshold. At this level, speech threshold plus 25 db, the discrimination in normal cases is 95-100% and almost the same value we have found in our series. We had no sound-proof room for this test but it was made where it is rather silent but not so silent as we wanted it to be, therefore the difference to the values of western countries (22 db) seems to be very small.
